Lutein benefits and side effects – Healthy vision

When we hear of carotenoid, it’s usually referred to lutein. It is the type of vitamin that is related to vitamin A and beta-carotene. Identified in certain fruits and vegetables, such as in those with deep orange and yellow coloring like oranges and carets. Lutein is a form of xanthophy11, often used to treat and prevent eye diseases. It is extracted directly from a “group of antioxidant plant pigments” and used as concentrated supplement.

What are the benefits of lutein?

Lutein main benefit is to treat eye diseases and reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). People who consume diet with high level of this vitamin appear to have lower risk of developing AMD and may not benefit from increasing their intake. However, for those who have poor diet and medical issues, taking lutein for over couple years it will show improvement in AMD symptoms. According to medical research, a great improvement maybe noticeable when taking greater than 10 mg a day for at least 1 year.

Are there side effects to taking lutein?

It is always recommended to consult a doctor before taking any supplements on daily bases. Taking lutein supplements or having diet that contain the appropriate amount of lutein is usually safe for individuals with no health issues. However, “those with skin cancer or cystic fibrosis, should be careful considering lutein supplements”. It is safe to consume 7-12 mg of lutein per day. Research showed, “lutein supplements have used safely at 15 mg daily does for up to two years”. Overdose lutein cause a condition known as carotenemia, the change of the skin color to yellow which is harmless.

How to get enough intake of lutein?

Stating lutein benefits and side effects give us clear understanding of how and where to get enough amount of lutein. If I would ask my father, his answer would be diet is the best medicine for all our health problems, and it is true. I recommend, consuming enough amount of diet with higher lutein before considering supplements. Even though, lutein supplements are known to be naturally extracted from the color of the plant.  Some of the food that contain lutein is,

What is Lutein good for?

There is many evidence out there that demonstrate the importance of lutein, especially on eye health. It’s a vitamin used as a medicine to prevent age-related macular disease that cause blindness, cataracts and other vision problems. It is known to build up in the retina and the lens of the eye, also protects the eye from injuries caused by chemical by-products and free radicals that damage the cells and lead to the development of certain diseases.
